3 ways I’m staying active at home for free

Before the shelter in place was enforced in New York City, I was working out 6-7 times a week. It helped me physically by getting fit, emotionally with all the endorphins, and also mentally since it helped me focus for the rest of the day. I’m also a person who thrives with routines, so having a scheduled workout every day helped me with time management.

So when the shelter in place was enforced and all the non-essential businesses closed (gyms and workout studios included), I was struggling to adjust in all aspects of my life. Instead of fixing everything at once, I decided to focus on readjusting one thing at a time. One of the first things I decided to focus on was trying to be a little active again. Luckily, I found a lot of online alternatives to be active which work well for me, especially since I live in a tiny NY apartment with no gym equipment. They’re also all free! I thought this might be helpful for others who are in the same boat!

1. Join a livestream workout

A lot of people on Instagram have started live streaming workouts for people to follow along at home. One of my favorites to follow so far has been Remi Ishizuka (@rrayyme)! She streams workouts on Instagram Live with her boyfriend, Nate Beard, at 9am PST/12PM EST every day. And if you’re not able to make it at that time, she uploads the workout to IGTV for people to view later. All you will need is a yoga mat for these workouts. Nate does a great job explaining each move and it’s easy to follow.

Another amazing couple that is also posting live workouts on Instagram is Anne Phung and JP Guzman. They alternate which Instagram account they post the workout on, so be sure to follow both!

2. Follow a workout on YouTube

There are many fitness YouTubers, but the one I’ve watched the most is Chloe Ting. She has her free workout programs on her website here. The thing I love about her program is it’s so easy to follow since she lists out all the videos you should follow each day and each video is generally 10-15 minutes long, so they’re pretty quick to breeze through!

A few other YouTubers I also recommend:

3. Learn a new dance

Lastly, if working out is not your thing, one thing I’ve been doing is learning a new dance! I’ve specifically been wanting to learn the choreography to Tae Yang’s Wedding Dress since it was released in 2010 and I now have a lot of time to try to do so. I’ve also been really intrigued by all of the fun, short dances on TikTok and I’m planning on learning those too! Don’t expect me to upload any dances soon, though. I’m very stiff and awkward, but it’s still fun to dance in the comfort of my own home.

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy! Are there any other ways you’re staying active at home?

Love your attitude towards this! I’ve heard so many people just be like…i’m only motivated at the gym etc. It’s all about finding something that works for you at home. There are so many workouts on youtube to follow – as you mentioned – free! They all vary in difficulty and some are actually pretty fun haha! I think people are missing the point that it’s not just to stay in their normal gym routine but what it’s actually doing for you mentally. This is a tough enough time as it is, don’t make it even more difficult more yourself. Stay safe! hopefully this starts to slow down soon and an end will be in sight.

We all just have to make the best of it and adapt our routines as needed right now. It’s great that you’ve found alternative ways to work out at home. Being able to get those good endorphins is so important to keep a positive mindset.
