Over the weekend, Will and I went to LuminoCity Festival! It’s an outdoor, holiday-themed illumination festival. There are a lot of beautiful lights and fun characters. It really reminded me of the illuminations that Tokyo had for Christmas when I lived there six years ago.
Since it was the opening day, it was really crowded. But even with the large crowds, it was such a large space that there were always opportunities to take photos of things or with things without being obstructed by other people.
The festival takes place in Randall’s Island, so it’s kind of out of the way and a pretty long walk from the subway station, so I recommend taking a rideshare or driving there.
I haven’t really taken my camera out in a while, so I used this as an opportunity to practice taking photos again! My photos aren’t great and I wish I had brought a different lens, but I think they turned out fine for someone who’s super rusty.
These sloths in the tree were probably one of my favorite parts of the festival. So much so that I had to take a photo with them.
It was a really fun and beautiful event! The festival goes through January 5th, so there’s a lot of time to visit.
If you plan on going, here are some tips:
- There are a lot of food vendors at the end, but the lines are long. Be prepared to wait. (We ended up leaving and walking over to Manhattan to grab a bite over there.)
- There are some makeshift walk-ways, but it can get pretty muddy there since the festival is set up on a grass field. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.
- It is an outdoor event, so dress warm and check the weather before you book a ticket so that you’re not stuck going on a rainy day.
- Bring a camera that does well in the dark because it’ll be dark when you go!
Is there an event like this near you for the holidays?
